Salzburg Card is the official city card of Salzburg, Austria, issued by Tourismus Salzburg GmbH, the city's tourism board. Available for 24, 48 or 72 hours as a physical card or a digital card on the visitor's smartphone, it includes one admission to the city's attractions and museums, free use of public transport (excluding S-Bahn trains), and discounts on cultural events, concerts and excursions. Cards are sold online and through hotels, tourist information offices, ticket bureaus and Salzburg Airport. Salzburg Card runs on feratel's Card System software, and Ventrata is integrated with feratel's API to validate and redeem the card.
This connection enables you to scan, validate and redeem Salzburg Cards from walk-up customers directly in Ventrata, eliminating the need for a separate feratel scanner or app and capturing every card visit in your Ventrata reporting. Capabilities of this connection allow you to:
Scan and validate cards on Ventrata-powered hardware (turnstile, ticket kiosk, point of sale / terminal), the mobile app or the dashboard.
Create bookings automatically in Ventrata for every valid card, so Salzburg Card visitors appear in your reporting, capacity and settlement.
Record redemptions (checks with transactions) from Ventrata back to feratel instantly, marking the card as used for your service.

Card Scanning
Card Scanning
When a QR code is scanned by Ventrata-powered hardware (e.g. turnstile, ticket kiosk, point of sale / terminal), the mobile app, or is entered into "Redeem Voucher Code" in the Ventrata dashboard AND it does not belong to one of your existing bookings/tickets, Ventrata verifies in real time with feratel whether the code belongs to a Salzburg Card and whether it is valid for admission to your attraction or activity at that moment. The printed card number can be entered instead of the QR code. Validity rules (card period, number of uses, double-use windows) are controlled by the card issuer in feratel.
Booking
Booking
If the card scanned is a valid Salzburg Card for your attraction or activity, a booking is automatically created in Ventrata under the Salzburg Card reseller, with the printed card number recorded as the reseller reference and on the invoice. The booking is made for the earliest tour/availability currently running, unless otherwise specified by a user (e.g. when booking on a ticket kiosk or with staff using a point of sale / terminal device). The product, option and unit booked are determined by your mapping, which is set per service and per card type (e.g. Adult or Child). See Mapping Products below.
Redemption
Redemption
The card use is communicated to feratel as a redemption ("check with transaction" feratel API request), marking the card as used for your service. When this transaction is sent is defined on the connection (see Creating Connection, step 5): by default when the card is validated and the booking created, or, if enabled, when the booking/ticket is redeemed or upgraded in Ventrata and/or when it is marked as a no-show. Redemption in Ventrata fails if feratel does not accept the transaction (for example, the card has already been used for your service within the allowed window). Redemptions recorded in feratel cannot be reversed from Ventrata.
Ventrata first checks the card with feratel without recording a use. A successful check does not reserve the service: if the card is used elsewhere before the redemption is sent, feratel rejects it. If booking and admission happen at different times (e.g. ticket kiosk or presale at a point of sale), we recommend enabling Redeem on Redemption/Upgrade so the card use is recorded at admission.
Creating Connection
Before you begin:
You must be a Salzburg Card partner attraction with a commercial agreement with Tourismus Salzburg GmbH. To inquire about joining the Salzburg Card, contact Tourismus Salzburg at [email protected].
Your attraction must be enabled for Ventrata by Tourismus Salzburg. Tourismus Salzburg informs feratel, and feratel activates your attraction's checkpoint for Ventrata.
You must be using Ventrata-powered hardware (turnstile, ticket kiosk, point of sale / terminal), the mobile app or the dashboard at the entry to your attraction or activity.
You must have Salzburg Card created as a Reseller in Ventrata with their pricing (retail, wholesale/commission) defined correctly. Note that this connection requires that the reseller is set to the "Bill to my account" settlement method.
Obtain your feratel credentials and test cards from Salzburg Card. To create the connection you need five values: Feratel Username, Feratel Password, Feratel Tenant ID, Feratel Client ID and Feratel Client Secret.
In the same request, ask for at least one Salzburg Card of each type you accept (e.g. one Adult and one Child) that includes your services. You will need them to set up and test your mapping (see Mapping Products, steps 2–6). Request both from your Salzburg Card contact at Tourismus Salzburg. If you need help, copy [email protected] on your request. In Ventrata Dashboard, go to Connections → Connections, click + New Connection, and select Salzburg Card from the list of partners:
Select Salzburg Card Reseller (e.g. Tourismus Salzburg GmbH) from the list of your resellers (must be created before creating a connection). The connection will inherit the reseller's configuration like pricing, allowed destinations, products and items, and all card bookings will be recorded on behalf of this reseller.
Enter the Feratel Username, Password, Tenant ID, Client ID and Client Secret received in step 1.
Define when the redemption transaction is sent to feratel, as agreed with Tourismus Salzburg, or leave the default (both unticked, in which case the card use is recorded with feratel when the card is validated and the booking created):
Redeem on Redemption/Upgrade — send the redemption to feratel when the booking is redeemed in Ventrata. Recommended when booking and admission happen at different times.
Redeem on No-show — send the redemption to feratel when the booking is marked as a no-show in Ventrata, including automatic no-shows.
(Optional) Set the connection Name of your choosing, allow/disallow destinations, products or items on the connection level in addition to what you have configured on the reseller, and tick Test if you want all Salzburg Card bookings forced into test mode and scans accepted only from equipment in test mode (un-tick before going live).
Click Create Connection and proceed to Mapping Products.
Mapping Products
Unfortunately, feratel does not provide the full list of services together with their card types (Adult, Child, etc.) over the API. Card types only come back when a card is checked for the first time. Mapping therefore happens in two stages: the services assigned to your attraction load automatically, and each card type is added the first time a card of that type is scanned.
Review Salzburg Card services. In Connections → Connections, open your Salzburg Card connection. The services assigned to your attraction are loaded automatically from feratel. These rows tell Ventrata which services to check, but they cannot be used for admission on their own.
Have one card of each type ready. Use the cards requested in Creating Connection, step 1. Test service cards don't work for this step, because they carry a test card type, not Adult or Child. If you scan a service card, a test card type row appears, which you can leave unmapped.
Scan each card. Scan the card on your Ventrata-powered hardware or mobile app, or enter its code or printed card number in Redeem Voucher Code in the dashboard. This first scan fails with a mapping error. This is expected, and the card is not mapped.
Reload the mapping. Back on the connection, reload the page (or click Refresh Mapping). A new row appears under the service for each card type you scanned (e.g. Adult, Child), highlighted in red as unmapped.
Map each card type. Click each row, select the Ventrata product, option and unit to be booked (e.g. Adult unit for Adult cards, Child unit for Child cards) and click Update Mapping. All three (product, option and unit) are required.
Scan again. Scan the same cards again. A booking is now created for the correct product and unit, and the redemption is sent to feratel according to your connection settings.
Repeat when anything changes. When a new service is assigned to your attraction, click Refresh Mapping first to import it, then scan a card of each type for that service and repeat steps 3–6. When Salzburg Card introduces a new card type for an existing service, just repeat steps 3–6. When a service is removed in feratel, Refresh Mapping deletes it together with its card-type mappings. If it is added back later, refresh, then scan and map it again.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Possible Solutions |
First scan of a card shows a mapping error. | Expected for a card type scanned for the first time. The card is not used up. Reload the connection page, map the new row and scan again (see Mapping Products, steps 3–6). |
Card scans but no booking is created. | The card type (e.g. Adult or Child) may not be mapped yet. Follow Mapping Products steps 3–6: reload the connection page, map the new row, then scan again. If the card is for a newly assigned service, click Refresh Mapping first (step 7). If the issue persists, please contact our support team. |
Scan returns "No booking found". | The code scanned is not a Salzburg Card, for example the QR code on a purchase receipt. Scan the QR code on the card or the visitor's digital card, or enter the printed card number. |
Card is rejected as not valid. | The error message comes from feratel and reflects the card's status and the usage rules set by Tourismus Salzburg (card expired, already used for your service today, not valid for this service). Customers should contact Tourismus Salzburg with questions about their card. |
Connection cannot be created or no services are loaded. | Check that all five feratel credentials are entered exactly as received from Salzburg Card, and that your attraction's checkpoint has been enabled for Ventrata. If the issue persists, contact your Salzburg Card contact and copy [email protected]. |
