Explore the capabilities of Segment integrated with Google Analytics 4 (GA4) in this practical example.

Segment supports a wide range of Destinations, enabling you to send your data to various tools and platforms seamlessly.

In our example, we demonstrate how to set up Google Analytics 4 (GA4) as a Destination to showcase Segment's capabilities when integrated with an analytics platform, providing a basic step-by-step guide.

Create a Google Analytics Property

  1. Sign in to your Google Analytics account.

  2. Press the Create button.

  3. Select 'Property'.

  4. Fill in the following:

    • Property name - a property represents data for one user base

      In general, you should set up one account per company and one property per brand or business unit (assuming your brands and business units are unique/distinct operating entities with separate stakeholders/analyst groups).


    • Reporting time zone - The time zone you want your reports to use, regardless of where the data comes from. If you change the time zone, it only affects data collected after the time zone change.

    • Currency - select the currency you want the reports in

  5. Press the Next button.

  6. In the 'Business details' section, select your industry category and business size.

  7. Press the Next button.

  8. Choose your business objectives.

  9. Press the Create button.

Add Segment as a Data Stream

  1. In your GA4 property, go to Data collection and modification > Data streams.

  2. Press the Add stream button.

  3. Select Web.

  4. Enter your checkout URL and give this stream a name.

  5. Press the Create & continue button when ready.

Configure Segment to GA4 Integration

  1. Go back to you Segment dashboard.

  2. Go to Destinations.

  3. Press the Add destination button.

  4. In the categories, select Analytics.

  5. Select 'Google Analytics 4 Cloud'.

  6. Press the Add destination button.

  7. Select your Javascript data source.

  8. Press the Next button.

  9. Then, enter a name for your GA4 destination.

  10. Press the Create destination button.

  11. In the list of destinations, select your newly created destination.

  12. Go to the Settings tab of your destination.

  13. Enter the following details about your GA4 destination:

    • Measurement ID - locate the 'Measurement ID' in your Google Analytics Account > Data collection and modification > Data streams > select [your_data_stream]

    • API Secret - in your Google Analytics Account go to Data collection and modification > Data streams > select [your_data_stream] > scroll down the stream detail > press Measurement Protocol API secrets > press Create

  14. To verify the integration:

    • Check your GA4 property to confirm that events are being received from Segment.

    • Use GA4's real-time reporting feature in GA4 to verify that events are flowing correctly.
