How to Activate Offline Payments for Adyen Terminals

Updated yesterday

📒 NOTE

This guide applies to all Adyen terminals supported by the Ventrata Terminal app. See the Hardware guides for supported devices.

Offline payments in the Ventrata Terminal app are supported only on Adyen payment terminals running the Ventrata Terminal app, using Adyen's Store-and-forward method. This method allows the terminal to temporarily store transactions while offline and automatically sync them once connection is restored.

About Store and Forward

With store and forward enabled, the Ventrata Terminal app can approve payments without real-time online verification. Store and forward is supported for:

  • contact chip transactions

  • contactless transactions

  • major credit card issuers

Store and forward is not supported for:

  • most local card schemes

  • QR code wallets

  • magnetic stripe transactions

  • cashback transactions

For more information on supported schemes, contact Adyen Support .

RISK WITH OFFLINE PAYMENTS

When offline payments are activated, transactions are approved before funds are received from the customer. This means:

  • you may not receive the money for some bookings

  • fraud detection is limited while offline

  • chargeback and dispute risks are higher.

You are fully liable for the risk of failed captures, chargebacks, and disputes related to payments processed offline.

Always define appropriate risk limits and a floor limit before activating offline payments.

Prerequisites:

Before activating offline payments:

To activate offline payments, contact your Ventrata Payment Specialist and provide the offline payment configuration details for your business.

Configuration Details

Provide the following information in your ticket to Adyen Support:

  • Type of offline payment: Store and forward

  • Risk limits for store and forward:

Setting

Store-and-forward max. amount

Provide the maximum number of store-and-forward transactions per terminal that can be processed while offline.

Supported card types

List the card types your terminals are allowed to accept while offline.

Normally, store-and-forward settings apply to all credit, debit, and prepaid cards in your account. Specific card types can be excluded if required.

  • Whether to enable store and forward for payments that normally require a PIN as CVM.
This includes initial transactions that create recurring details for a shopper for loyalty use cases or later recurring payments using a token.

  • Whether to block contactless transactions for store and forward mode. This allows terminals to only accept chip transactions when they are offline.

  • Whether to enable Manual key entry (MKE) mode.

    📒 NOTE

When MKE is enabled, there is no liability shift. You are fully liable for fraud chargebacks.

  • Whether to enable Auto Rescue. This feature automatically retries failed store-and-forward payments.
