How to Activate a Device in Scan Only Mode

Validate tickets with handheld devices or connected turnstile solutions, adding extra security checks for a seamless customer experience.

The Scan Only mode is designed for use with turnstiles, allowing customers to pass through a barrier to enter a restricted area or gain access to an attraction. This mode can also help sellers streamline the ticket validation process using handheld devices.

📒 NOTE

Each use case assumes that the necessary hardware is properly connected and configured to ensure correct functionality.


Attended

When a device in Scan Only mode is 'Attended', it means that sellers have certain limited capabilities, as well as access to manifests and settings.

Create Scan Only Terminal

  1. In your Ventrata dashboard to Ticket Terminals > Terminals.

  2. If you operate in more than one destination, select the appropriate destination.

  3. Press the +New Terminal button.

  4. Enter terminal 'Name'.

  5. Enter 'Serial Number' if available.

    📗 TIP

    If you are using a terminal device, you can find the Serial Number on the back of the device (copy the number following S/N). If you are using a phone, go to Settings > About phone for Android / System Settings > General > About for iOS.


  6. Select the 'Gateway' that will process card payments if the device is equipped to do so.

  7. Select the configs of all peripheral devices such as printers, scanners, routers, etc. connected to the terminal.

  8. Select ‘Scan only’ under Mode.

  9. Check the 'Attended' box to allow sellers to scan and redeem tickets. Sellers also have access manifests and settings.

  10. Select the location where the device will be used.

  11. Press the Update Terminal button, or the Create Terminal button if a new terminal is created.

  1. In the Ventrata dashboard, go to Ticket Terminals > Locations.

  2. Select the appropriate location.

  3. Select the scan-only terminal(s) that will be used at the location in the 'Scan Terminals' field.

Unattended

Unattended mode is primarily designed for use with turnstiles.

Customers scan their tickets, and the system determines how to handle entry based on the configuration:

  • When Perform Next Action is disabled, the turnstile simply validates whether tickets are valid for entry.

  • When Perform Next Action is enabled and there is no balance due on the booking, tickets are redeemed at the turnstile and customers can enter the attraction.

Create Scan Only Terminal

  1. In your Ventrata dashboard to Ticket Terminals > Terminals.

  2. If you operate in more than one destination, select the appropriate destination.

  3. Select an existing terminal or create a new terminal.

  4. Select ‘Scan Only’ under Mode.

  5. Keep the 'Attended' box unchecked.

  6. Check the 'Perform Next Action' to have the device automatically perform the next logical action if it is enabled in the Location settings.

  7. Select the location where the device will be used.

  8. Press the Update Terminal button, or the Create Terminal button if a new terminal is created.

  1. In the Ventrata dashboard, go to Ticket Terminals > Locations.

  2. Select the appropriate location.

  3. Scroll down the form or search 'Allowed Next Action'.

  4. Select the actions the terminal will do when tickets are scanned.

    • Collect Balance - if there is a balance due, an error message will be shwon onscreen

    • Complete Waiver - if a waiver is required but is not signed by the customer(s), an error message will be shown onscreen

    • Redeem - scanned tickets are redeemed

    • Scan - tickets are scanned but not redeemed

    • Nothing - no action is performed

  5. Select the scan-only terminal(s) in the 'Scan Terminals' field.
