How to Use Express Entry

Learn how to configure a scan-only terminal and location to support quick self-service ticket sales and scanning.

Create the Scan-Only Terminal in Ventrata

This is the device customers will use to purchase or scan tickets.

  1. In the Ventrata dashboard, go to Ticket Terminals > Terminals in the navigation bar.

  2. If you use Destinations, select the destination for which you want to add the new terminal.

  3. Press the + New Terminal button.

  4. Enter terminal 'Name'.

    📗 TIP

    Make sure to enter a descriptive name so the device is easily recognised in the list.


  5. Enter 'Serial Number' if available.

    You can find the Serial Number on the back of the device (copy the number following S/N).

  6. Select the appropriate gateway.

  7. Select the configs of all peripheral devices such as scanners and turnstiles that communicate with the terminal.

  8. Select the Scan Only mode.

  9. Uncheck the 'Attended' box.


    📗 TIP

    As a self-service device, typically it will be customers, instead of sellers, who will operate the device.


  10. Check the 'Perform Next Action' to have the device automatically execute the next logical step as configured in the Location settings.

  11. Select the location where the device will be used.

  12. Press the Create Terminal button.

Create Preset

A preset grants access to or sells one specific product in a fixed configuration, for example, only adult tickets for a single option.

  1. In your Ventrata dashboard, go to Ticket Terminals > Presets.

  2. Make sure the correct destination is selected.

  3. Press the + New Preset button.

  4. Enter a name.

    📗 TIP

    It is good practice to include a descriptive name, for example, the product code, unit, tour time and/or promotion if available.


  5. Select the product the preset is for.

  6. If the product has options, select an option.

  7. Select a unit.

  8. Select a tour (optional).

    📗 TIP

    If no tour is specified, at the time of purchase, the next available tour will be automatically selected.


  9. You can select a promotion which will be automatically applied to the booking.

  10. Press the Create Preset button.

Create Location

Configure the location where the device will be operated.

  1. In the Ventrata dashboard, go to Ticket Terminals > Locations.

  2. Select the appropriate destination.

  3. Press the + New Location button.

  4. Enter the location's name. Specify if the location is an entrance or an exit.

  5. Assign a sales channel where sales from the location will be recorded.

  6. Assign a Viva Wallet gateway.

  7. If the device also communicates with a turnstile, you can configure and add a counter to the location.

    Select whether the device scans entries or exits.

    Select the counter associated with the turnstile associated with the device.

  8. Select 'Collect Balance' under 'Allowed Next Actions.

    You can keep all other options checked, except 'Complete Waiver' selected.


  9. Select what payment methods will be accepted at the location.

    The express entry mode is a self-service mode, so make sure to keep the 'Credit/Debit Card' method checked.


  10. Select how tickets purchased form the terminal will be delivered.

  11. Select a preset, or a booking configuration of a product, that will be the only product sold at the location.

  12. Make sure to allow the product of the preset by unchecking the 'Allow All Products' and selecting the correct product.

  13. Then, uncheck the 'Allow Redeem All Products' and select the same product here.

  14. Finally, add the scan-only terminal to 'Scan Terminals'.

  15. Press the Create Location button.

Express Entry Flow

Express entry supports two services

  • Buy tickets

  • Scan tickets

Buy Tickets

The customer presses the Buy tickets button.

They select the number of tickets. The product, dat and time are preconfigured by the preset.

Ticket Selection

To continue, the customer presses the Pay Now button, which shows the total price including tax.

Typically, only card payments is allowed. The customer completes the purchase by tapping or inserting their card.

Payment in Process

After a successful payment, a success screen is presented to the customer. If printing is enabled at the location, the customer can take the printed tickets.

If the payment fails, an error message with a brief description is shown.
